Annual General Meeting
8 May 2006
Chairman's Summary & Presentation of Accounts
A number of events took place during the year including the War Memorial, Barn Dance, Children's Christmas Party and Village Carol Singing, Race Night. The Carols and the Race Night produced a profit for the Village.
The biggest source of income, the Village Fair, didn't take place last year as there was nowhere for visitors to park. This has been overcome for the future by clearing the field leased by BHNC at a cost of £2485.00.
Other major costs were the War Memorial (£636.42), Barn Dance (£2399.36), Public Liability Insurance (£1575.00), storage rental (£290.00), storage facility renovation (£800.00) and purchase of trestle tables for use at events (£825.00). This last item adds to the assets already held of gazebos, tables, chairs, fencing, catering equipment and ancillary items.
Net funds on hand at 31 March 2006 were £2816.19. Funds the previous year stood at £10127.39.
Looking forward , BHNC keeps a watching brief over planning and other issues of concern to the Village. It continues to run a website for the interest of Villagers.
Speedwatch
There is no shortage of volunteers for training but there's a continuing lack of commitment thereafter with a shortfall in people who will take a turn on duty. Those kind stalwarts who do take a turn produce many speeding reports for the Police to follow up in an effort to stop speeding through the village.
Casualty Reduction Officer PC Ken Wheeler attended the meeting and reported that this should become more consistent once a full-time administrator is in place; recruitment has been very protracted but will continue until filled.
The new laser gun is now in use and the permanent roundels placed at each end of the Village meaning that the heavy temporary Speedwatch signs need not be used. A lightweight, bright yellow A-sign is used at the survey point instead.
Information gleaned from Speedwatch reports can be used for other crime reduction purposes and the whole exercise now has more support from Police chiefs.

Free ‘bus Travel for Senior Citizens in Surrey
From 1 st April 2006. bus travel for senior citizens became free within Surrey. Up until then, only half price tickets were available.
Senior Citizens' permits are accepted after 9am Mondays to Fridays and any time at weekends and on bank/public holidays. There are some restrictions, like not using the pass solely for work. Full details at www.surreycc.gov.uk , click on Roads & Transport, then choose Travelling in Surrey.
To get a permit you must live in Surrey and be aged 60 or over. To apply you will need to provide proof of residence in Surrey and age, for example a pension book or birth certificate, along with your completed application form. If you already have a permit from the previous year, you can provide that.
If you find it impossible to travel on your own you can apply for a Companion Permit.
Call Mole Valley to enquire on 01306 885001.
...and that's not all!
In the Budget Speech on 22 March 2006 the Government announced that from April 2008 every pensioner and disabled person will have free off-peak bus travel in England. The budget for this is £250 million per year.
April 2006
Another Race Night Success!
There were many handsome winning bets at the latest Race Night on 18 th March and the Village Fund gained around £1000 thanks to the support of everyone who attended. This will go some way towards the cost of preparing for the Village Fair.
Daphne's superb supper of sausage casserole, jacket potatoes and ratatouille followed by the most decadent of chocolate cakes was most welcome.
Our thanks to everyone who helped before and on the day. Special thanks must go to Rob and Mary, the new
managers of the Hand in Hand, who quietly disappeared and did all the washing up (no paper plates for us!). Thanks also to them and to others who kindly donated raffle prizes.
Crime on the Hill
Already this Spring, there has been theft from a garden shed of expensive gardening equipment. And theft from vehicles in NT and pub car parks seems to be on the increase.
Keep a good lookout and report anything suspicious to the Police on 0845 125 2222 (or 999 for any crime in progress).
In the background…
Village Fair planning—you, too, can join in the fun!
While we hope all of you are noting Sunday 16 th July 2006 in your diaries, a small troop of BHNC and BHNC Event Committee members is beavering away together with other volunteers getting everything in place for the Village event of the year! It's all about raising money for the Village—and bringing the community together.
There's already been much activity in the field leased by BHNC behind the Hand in Hand so it's ready to use as a car park on the day. After it was professionally cleared over a week's hard work by Furlonger Tree Services (to whom our thanks for discounted rates), Roy volunteered and did an excellent job clearing 97 tree stumps. Robin will further clear the ground and a mound of junk ironworks will be removed to the tip. This area will look very much better in future!
Others preparation includes local fundraising, organising the craft stallholders, first aid cover and publicity material and advertising for the event together with sideshows, entertainment, attractions and catering for the day. Nearer the time, the fairground itself will be prepared and all involved briefed and supplied with everything they need on the day.
Everyone in the Village can help —either by calling Events Committee Chairman Daphne Ladell (who co-ordinates the whole event) on 01737 843644 to discuss options, or by donating raffle or tombola prizes. If food preparation's your thing, how about some spud bashing for the now famous Box Hill Chips? Or perhaps you'd prefer to enjoy the Fair on the day and help to clear up afterwards. There's something for everyone. Enjoy!

Look out for Fly-Tippers
There's been an increase in fly-tipping in the Village as elsewhere—often in the very early hours of the morning. It includes two lorry loads of swept leaves, and conifer, logs and other foliage has been dumped in a private driveway.
Having your trees & hedges cut back or other waste removed? It's worth knowing that, subject to fines of up to £50,000, householders have a responsibility to ensure their rubbish is passed on to authorised carriers only! More information at http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2005/051114a.htm .

Speed Sign-Thanks to Volunteers who has volunteered to keep a weather eye on the speed sign in different locations along Boxhill Road.
This has resulted in its much more effective use and some real attention being paid by speeding drivers.
Anyone else who'd like to discuss volunteering should ring Richard Trill on 01737 842100.
Rural Transport in our Village
East Surrey Rural Transport Partnership held a Community Transport Week at the end of August aiming to promote community transport in East Surrey-see the new posters on the noticeboard.
