BOX
HILL was quite literally cut off for a period on Tuesday
19 March, causing frustration to residents and visitors.
The road was understandably closed at the Headley end
due to road works. In their wisdom the contractors decided,
at some stage in the morning, that traffic should be
stopped from coming up the Zig-Zag. Road Closed were
set up, motorists were stopped and told there was no
entry. It seemed to have escaped their notice that people
do live on Box Hill and need to have access to their
homes, quite apart from anyone who may be visiting.
There
was no apparent reason for the Zig-Zag to be closed:
a sign indicating that there was no through road to
Headley was the necessary action required. A Parish
Lent lunch was being held at Woodcote, Ashurst Dnve
and Headley people found that there was no way of getting
there. Friends Esme and Jean, from Dorking, were the
last to make it up to Box Hill before others were firmly
turned back.
The
Rector, David Wotlon. with admirable Initiative and
determination drove up the track from Lodgebotlom Road
and through into the far end of Ashurst Drive to arrive
in time to say a prayer before lunch. "Thank you.
David, it was really nice to see you" said hostess
Beryl Langley, who added: "It was disappointing
to have only nine for lunch, but it was a pleasant sociable
occasion which raised some extra money for the Bishop
of Guidlford's Lent Appeal for chaniable causes. (Overall
the five Lent lunches in the Parish of Headley with
Box Hill raised over £360).
